Corona, Electric, and Magnetic Field Studies

In this period of environmental awareness, the field levels of transmission lines and substations have become dominant factors in siting new facilities.

Because most of the design features which reduce magnetic and electric field levels near ground result in higher electric field levels at the surface of the conductors, field management often comes at the cost of increased corona, audible noise, and potential for communications interference. Hence, comprehensive evaluation of the corona and field performance of transmission lines and substations is required during the design and siting processes.

Electric Research has the expertise to assist utilities in designing and siting transmission lines and substations to minimize corona, electric, and magnetic field impact by providing the following services:

  • Collecting site or route specific data necessary to establish acceptability criteria for the various field and corona effects.

  • Calculating the corona and field characteristics parametrically for the full range of design parameters subject to manipulation.

  • Updating site specific data after the line is constructed, but before it is energized.

  • Measuring field levels in the vicinity of the newly energized facility.

  • Documenting levels of electric and magnetic fields, radio noise, audible noise, induced current, or other parameters of interest.

In addition, Electric Research offers additional services which include:

  • Evaluating the impact of standard line designs or cut-in substations on proposed new rights-of-way.

  • Determining optimum conductor configurations to meet the needs of a specific siting.

Allow Electric Research to assist you in determining the levels of interference, interpreting the importance of interference, and recommending steps to mitigate undesirable effects.
